Drills

Here are a few standard biathlon drills you can practice with your athletes. There is data available on any of the National Team and Precision Tests in our Data Analysis Section of the website.

Check out the Lesson Plan section if you are looking for a way to put this all together.

White Paper Drill

Works on: Consistent Set-up, Accuracy

Put up one piece of white paper. Ask the athletes to shoot the best group they can in the white paper. This will rely on consistent breathing and steady position. For added challenge – do it with one shot set-up.

Around the Clock

Works on: Accuracy, Aiming, Shading, Clicking

Have athletes learn to shoot by aiming off or teach them how much their clicking moves their sights through having them shoot “around the clock”. On one paper target, have them try to shoot a group on the edge of the top, left, right and bottom of the target. For extra challenge, try to have them shoot groups in the same placements but on the prone ring.

Magazine to 1 Shot Comparison

Works on: Set-up Consistency, Grouping

Have the athletes shoot 1 magazine (5 shots) into a paper target. Then have them do 5x 1 shot set-up into the next target over. Compare grouping size and use to discuss consistent set-up and position.

Lines

Works on: Accuracy, Aiming

Using a sharpie, make a line on the back of a paper target that is as thick as the prone ring, and as tall or long as the target itself. (Usually you can see through the paper to do this). Make photocopies if you don’t want to be coloring in lines all day. You can use this to have athletes shoot up and down the lines, or have them try to group in the middle of the lines. Can be used vertically or horizontally with different goals in mind.

Recording your Shots

Works on: Accuracy, Feedback

Have your athletes record where they think their shots went for 5x 1-shots on paper in a circle ring. (Can just be hand drawn). Then compare how accurate their estimations were to the actual shot.

Inner Targets

Works on: Accuracy

Have your athletes work on accuracy through drills requiring them to hit the inner prone ring on paper, or the prone ring for standing.
